You never know where art will pop up next!

The Carlsbad Village Association (CVA) is excited to be hosting a new pop-up art experience in downtown Carlsbad. While the Village has long been home to a variety of art events such as Art in the Village, the Makers Market, and even seasonal events such as the Carlsbad Village Art Walk, this temporary art installation is designed to create interaction between the business and creative arts sectors.

Starting Saturday, June 17th and running through Sunday, June 25th, 10 local and regional artists will have a unique image, with a twist, on display. Artists were tasked with creating a "Carlsbad-centric" image with their canvas being a surfboard! You read that right. CVA put out a Call For Artists and received more entries than they anticipated. The artists who were chosen are very excited to be bringing a custom Carlsbad-themed image to life.

The 10 unique surfboards will be on display starting June 17th in the courtyard at the Village Faire Shopping Center (300 Carlsbad Village Dr.) They will then be moved into 10 different businesses where they will remain on display for the week leading up to the 25th anniversary of Art in the Village. On June 25th they will be on display at Art in the Village for everyone to enjoy.

The artists and their mediums include:

- Ira Cosmos - Airbrush
- Monica Martin - Acrylic/Collage
- Wendy Sallin - Shattered Glass
- Shari Roberts - Acrylic
- Jim Rajner - Carved
- Ismat Sami Shahid - Acrylic
- Alexia Markopoulos - Acrylic/Mixed media
- Taylor DeVille - Paint/Marker
- Alice Picado - Acrylic/Oil
- Julie Sobolewski - Stained Glass

Artists just received their surfboards and are creating as we speak. Check back for more details, including biographies of the artists, a peak into their creative process, and more information on the pop up art installation itself. Details and stories will be available soon online at www.carlsbad-village.com. And be sure to follow us on Instagram (@carlsbadvillage) to stay up to date on this amazing pop up art experience.

The Carlsbad Village Association (CVA) and the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts are working in collaboration to engage established artists to use a wide array of media on display in different storefronts of local businesses in the Village. The goals of this program are to:

- Create interaction between the business and creative arts sectors
- Promote greater awareness of local and regional artists
- Embody Carlsbad’s commitment to the arts
- Attract residents and visitors to provide an enhanced experience, and
- Encourage local businesses to incorporate unique temporary artistic creations that enliven the Village.

Carlsbad realizes an inclusive vision of the arts and culture in everyday life, while stimulating an expanding creative sector economy. Original and unique artistic creations, as temporary public art, spur dialogue and enhance the Village as destination, while connecting to major city initiatives as outlined in the Village and Barrio and the Arts & Culture Master Plans.

This program is supported by the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts.
