Meet the Artists: Carlsbad’s First Freeway Underpass Art Installation

Blog Post - April 13, 2025

Category: What's New

The Chestnut Avenue underpass beneath I-5 is about to become a whole lot more inspiring. As the City of Carlsbad prepares to install its first-ever permanent public art at a freeway underpass, the artist team Greenmeme is inviting the community to help shape the vision.

Stop by the Carlsbad Village Association office (2695 State Street) on Friday, April 25, from 9AM to 11AM to meet the artists in person, explore their past work, and share what you think makes Carlsbad unique. Your input will help guide the creative direction of the Chestnut Underpass Public Art project, which aims to reflect the local character of the surrounding neighborhood. Enjoy coffee, pastries, and juice while you learn and talk about the project.

If you can’t make the Friday morning session, there are two more opportunities to connect with Greenmeme on Saturday, April 26:

  • 10AM to noon at Holiday Park (1055 Chestnut Avenue)
  • 1PM to 3PM at the Library Learning Center (3368 Eureka Place)

Whether you live nearby or simply love public art, your ideas matter. If you prefer to share your thoughts virtually, you can email arts@carlsbadca.gov. Greenmeme will continue developing the concept in the coming months, and the city anticipates providing an update to the Arts Commission this summer.
