The City of Carlsbad and the San Diego Bike Coalition are joining forces to promote a greener Earth Day in Carlsbad Village. On April 22nd join the movement and ride your bike to the Village and take part in all of the activities happening in downtown Carlsbad. And, don’t worry about the parking. Let them take care of that with their hosted Bike Valet (located at Barrio Glassworks - 3060 Roosevelt St.) and get a free bike inspection to boot!
According to the host providers, a Bicycle Valet is like a coat check for bicycles. Valet service helps ensure that bicycles and their accessories are not stolen. People appreciate the extra security of valet, and the service is quite popular. The San Diego Bike Coalition will provide the bike corral for security, bike racks for bikes without kickstands and staff to provide bike check-in and check-out.
While you’re out enjoying the Makers Market (2938 Roosevelt St.), volunteering at the annual I Love a Clean San Diego “Creek to Bay” cleanup (2965 Roosevelt St.), or enjoying the Eclectic Lawn music series (2775 Carlsbad Blvd.) your bike will be safe and sound and enjoying a basic bike inspection from Pedego Carlsbad that typically includes checking various components of a bicycle to ensure that they are functioning properly and safely. Time permitting, this will include the following:
1. Frame: Checking for any cracks or damage in the frame, which could affect the bike's structural integrity.
2. Wheels: Inspecting the wheels for true alignment, checking for loose spokes, and ensuring that they spin smoothly.
3. Tires: Checking the tire pressure and condition, including looking for any cuts, punctures, or excessive wear.
4. Brakes: Checking the brake pads for wear, making sure they engage properly, and checking the brake cables for tension and proper adjustment.
5. Drivetrain: Inspecting the chain, chainrings, and cassette for wear, checking the shifting performance, and ensuring that the pedals spin smoothly.
6. Handlebars and stem: Checking for proper alignment, making sure the stem is securely fastened, and ensuring that the handlebars are straight and not loose.
7. Seat and seatpost: Checking the seat for proper height and alignment, ensuring that it is securely fastened to the seatpost, and checking the seatpost for any damage or slippage.
8. Bolts and fasteners: Checking all bolts and fasteners on the bike, including those for the brakes, derailleurs, and other components, to ensure that they are properly tightened.
9. Safety features: Check that lights, reflectors, and bells function correctly and securely attached to the bike.
According to Pedego Carlsbad co-owner, John Orndorff, “A basic bike inspection is a proactive approach to bike maintenance that can help ensure your bike's safety, performance, longevity, and cost-effectiveness, making it a worthwhile investment for any bike owner."
A properly functioning bike is safer to ride. A well-maintained bike performs better, providing a smoother and more enjoyable riding experience. Regular inspections and maintenance can help extend the lifespan of a bike by identifying and addressing any wear and tear or damage to components early on, which can prevent further damage and costly repairs down the road. Addressing minor issues during a bike inspection can prevent them from becoming major problems that require expensive repairs or replacements. And knowing that your bike is in good condition and safe to ride can give you peace of mind, especially if you use your bike for commuting, transportation, or recreational purposes frequently.
Pedego Carlsbad will be handing out 15% off bike tune ups for anyone in attendance that wants their bike tuned up; offer is good for 30 days from the event date.
