Outdoor Dining In The Village and Barrio

The City of Carlsbad would like your feedback on outdoor dining options, or "outdoor activations," such as curb cafes, sidewalk cafes and private outdoor dining areas in parking lots in the Village and Barrio area.

These outdoor business activities were allowed previously in the Village and Barrio on a limited basis. However, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city relaxed its standards so more businesses could move operations outdoors. The City is now evaluating how it should consider outdoor activations in the future.

Input from residents and business is important to this process and ensures the City considers stakeholder sentiment. It should take less than five minutes to complete.

Help strengthen design standards in Village and Barrio

The city is looking for residents who live in the Village and Barrio who would be interested in serving on a citizens committee that will help turn existing design standards for multifamily and mixed-use projects in the Village and Barrio into “objective design standards.”

Under new state housing laws, creating objective design standards is one way cities can retain influence over new development.

Applications are currently being accepted for the following committee members:

  • Two Village residents
  • Two Barrio residents
  • A downtown business owner
  • Two people with experience developing multifamily housing and/or mixed-use projects in Carlsbad

The committee will meet approximately three times over one year and will also include a member of the city’s Planning Commission and a member of the Historic Preservation Commission. Citizen committee members will be appointed by the City Council.

The deadline for applications is noon on Monday, Feb. 7, 2022.
